La Sandra Paris
Aunt Sis, aka Melba Menefee was my first exposure to what a fierce, unapologetic, warrior princess looked like. The women of Wakanda have nothing on her. She was devoted to her family and used her quick wit and tenacious manner to protect her loved ones. My mother would always call her big sister if someone was “messing with her.” Sis would take care of the situation. And she loved telling stories. So much so that she would not skip a beat if you dared to comment that you had heard that one before. You were going to hear it again so listen up! She was truly someone who “broke the mold” and will be profoundly missed. I will miss her stories, the sound of her voice, and the comfort of spending family time in her kitchen. There was always something to eat during my summer visits. And, adventures to experience with my cousins. I loved all the noise that I associated with summers in Texas. Times I’ll never forget. My mother, her baby sister, was deeply saddened when she heard the news of her passing. All she could say was “not Sis.” If her health was better she would be present to say a proper good bye. Rest In Peace Aunt Sis. My mother and I will miss you and take comfort that you are regaling family who have passed before you with the stories of all they missed. To all my cousins you are in my thoughts.
Much Love,
The Squires Family
