Thomas Edward Logans' Obituary
THOMAS EDWARD LOGANS
A Brilliant, Successful, Gentle, Devoted, Humble Soul
Thomas (“Tom”) Edward Logans was the second youngest of nine children, born to Richard Arnold Logans and Paulina Barker Logans in San Diego, California. Tom grew up in a hard-working, two-parent home where he honed his athletic and academic skills that would eventually win him a scholarship to pursue his higher education. He grew up in Mount Zion Baptist Church and later, joined in his youth.
Tom was an early achiever and demonstrated his leadership abilities at an early age. He was elected and served as class president throughout his junior high school years. He excelled in several sports at San Diego High School, ultimately being named “San Diego High Athlete of the Century.” After graduating and being the first in his family to attend college, he chose San Diego State University, where he graduated cum laude in the top one-third of his graduating class. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Education and Pre-Dental, along with a double minor in Chemistry and Social Sciences. Tom was always actively involved on campus while maintaining his Dean’s List status; he was honored in “Who’s Who in College and Universities,” served as Vice President of Key National Honor Society and was President & Vice President of the Honor Service Fraternity, all while participating on both the track and varsity wrestling teams.
Following his graduation from college, Tom opted to become an educator where he taught for one year, before utilizing his chemistry background, transitioning to sales and marketing with Pfizer, Inc. Later, he became Employee Affairs Manager and Affirmative Action Director for Levi Strauss & Co., in San Francisco, where he successfully recruited women and minorities to their sales force. Levi Strauss relocated Tom to Houston, Texas in 1981 when he became their Senior Accounts Manager, working for them for over 15 years. Tom later worked for several other corporations, as Major Accounts Manager for MCI Communications Corp, Business Development and Sales Manager for Xerox Corporation, G-Tech Corporation, Aztec Facility Services and Clear Channel Communications (KHYS Radio). During his tenure at G-Tech, his management skills were highlighted when he generated over $600 million dollars while helping them to become the number one district in the state for lotto sales, while servicing over 16,000 accounts. While at Aztec Facility Services, as Sales & Operations Manager, he assisted with obtaining the highest profit margins and net profits in the company’s history.
In January of 1982, Tom met and four months later, married Reneé Williams during Memorial Day Weekend. They shared a true partnership. In 2002, Tom became Vice President of Sales & Marketing and co-owner of Access Data Support Services (Access Data Supply, Inc.) with his wife; together they built a successful company from a startup.
Throughout his educational and life journey, Tom was always the consummate professional who left a lasting impression upon the Houston business community. He attributed his success to his early exposure and participation in the Oakes Boys Club in San Diego, which was his home away from home, and assisted him with becoming “socialized,” while teaching him how to make responsible decisions, preparing him with character-building attributes which enabled him to pursue his career journey. One could even say that Tom was an “over achiever” who was a brilliant scholar, voracious reader, meticulous dresser and a lover of his favorite sports car, Porsche.
On July 19, 2023, Tom made his earthly transition. He leaves many who loved him and will cherish the special memories: former wives’ Dorothy Logans and Reneé Logans, companion Regenia Hicks, his sister-in-laws, Joann Logans and Versa Logans, his nephews and nieces, his best friends, Willie Horton, Tammy Lanier and Rosezetta Bobo, as well as a host of other special friends and colleagues.
