Satoko Indakwa's Obituary
The family of Mrs. Satoko Indakwa (formerly Mitsuka), beloved daughter Saki Indakwa, treasured son, Kazi Indakwa and daughter-in-love, Dr. Nichole Brathwaite-Dingle announce her passing from life to rebirth on October 11. Born on July 23, 1930, she was 92. In the Buddhist tradition, death is embraced as a part of life and Satoko's soul remains close to her loved ones forever.
Satoko was both brilliant and progressive, even in her youth. After graduating from Tokyo Women's Christian University, she made her way to the United States and enrolled in African American studies at Howard University, at the peak of the Civil Rights movement. It was there that she met her late husband, Dr. John Indakwa. They married and together, made Houston their home.
In her later years, Satoko reconnected with her Japanese roots and became actively engaged with the Japanese American Citizens League and other Asian community organizations. She equally mastered both the art of conversation on the topics of the day, engaging with people from all walks of life, and the traditional "mom" talents like stitching the hem on a ball gown, with ease. In the face of health challenges, she fought valiantly until her transition with her loved ones by her side.
Final arrangements have been entrusted to Mabrie Memorial Mortuary. A celebration of life is planned in the New Year.
