Sandra Kay Dobbins Haggray was the oldest of four children in the household of Robert Excell Dobbins and Stella Mae Rose Dobbins. The household consisted of Sandra, affectionately known as Sasan, and her three younger brothers. She was always protective of all of them. At an early age, Sandra responded to the Gospel Message and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior.
Sandra attended primary and secondary school here in Houston. Early on, she developed an attraction to and passion for music. She found her niche in choir and took advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow. She graduated from Jessie H. Jones High School and later graduated with a BA degree in Music from Texas Southern University.
Sandra enjoyed her time at TSU, where she continued to advance in music and theater. While at TSU, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. After graduating college, Sandra went on to teach elementary music. Oh, how she loved to teach children music.
She met her future husband Warren L. Haggray at Liberty Baptist Church. Warren and Sandra were married by the Founding Pastor of Liberty Baptist Church, Samuel Ammons on July 20, 1991. After marriage, the couple relocated to Dallas, Texas where they both attended Graduate Schools, Sandra at Southern Methodist (SMU) and Warren at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS). Both received their master’s degrees in May of 1995.
Sandra joined her husband as they moved from Dallas to College Station, Texas where Warren became pastor of Brazos Valley Bible Church until 1998. While in College Station, their daughter Esther was born. Sandra loved Esther with all her heart. In addition, she loved and appreciated the great supportive people there in Bryan-College Station. Many of those she met became lifelong friends. Again, however, she followed her husband as he returned to the military as an Army Chaplain.
In 2007, Sandra received a double lung transplant in San Antonio, Texas. She and her family remain grateful to God and all who supported her on this 16-year journey. Truly God is Good!
Sandra spent the next 23 years as a teacher and military spouse. She supported her husband faithfully through two wars and a host of deployments. Over the course of her musical career, Sandra had the opportunity to sing for renowned opera singer Leontyne Price, The San Antonio Master Singers and in Houston Symphonic Chorus and Kuumba House of Houston. Sandra had opportunities to sing in Italy and Spain on different occasions.
Sandra and Pastor Haggray were married for 32 years.
Sandra was preceded in death by her mother, Stella Mae Rose Dobbins; Father, Robert Excell Dobbins; and brother, Robert Dobbins Jr.
Sandra is survived by her loving husband Pastor and Chaplain (LTC) Warren L. Haggray Retired; the daughter she hoped for, Esther Alice Haggray; siblings, Chris Dobbins; John Dobbins (Jade); Kevin Williams (Virginia); and Renee Cherry; Aunts, Barbara Rose; Mary Rose; Uncle, Phillip Rose (Mary); and a host of brothers-in law, sisters-in law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
