I (Herbert Green 713-270-5371) met Mr. Sewing in late 1968 when I became employed as a File Clerk for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. I was the fifth African- American hired by the Agency. Mr. Sewing welcomed me and inspired me as a role model to walk with dignity and demand respect in a non-hostile way, while exhibiting excellence in performance, in a somewhat hostile environment at the Agency at that time. Mr. Sewing had the personality and ability to even make his adversaries respect and like him. He could take the negative, hateful and sarcastic remarks spoken to him and redirect them back to speaker, and make them laugh at themselves for uttering such nonsense, and walk away smiling. If you did not like Mr. Richard Sewing, you probably do not like yourself either. Mr. Sewing and others before me paved the way so that I did not have to face some of the abuse that they endured. Mr. Sewing instilled in me an appreciation for my blessings and finally, that my future was not determined by what others thought of me, but what I thought of myself. Rest in Peace Mr. Sewing. May the Peace of God be with the Family.
