Mrs. Rhonda Simms Calhoun's Obituary
Rhonda Michelle was Born to David and Rose Simms on April 27, 1958 in Boston Massachusetts. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, and friend. She transitioned from this life to her heavenly home on November 30, 2023. She was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives according to God’s purpose and plan. She was educated through Boston Public Schools during her early years and later graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth Massachusetts. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Texas Southern University and returned for her Master’s degree in Educational Administration.
Rhonda moved to Houston, Texas in her early twenties and on July 28, 1984, she married the love of her life, John Curtis Calhoun, at Holy Tabernacle Church officiated by Bishop Joe L. Smith, to their union 3 amazing sons were born— John Curtis Jr., JoRhon DaJul and Jomi Virdel. She loved traveling, camping, shopping, and helping everybody—no matter how near or far. Her early work history
included Shawmut Bank, Houston Lighting and Power Company and Verizon Cellular. It wasn’t until she stepped into the Northeast side of Houston that her true passion became evident. She began her calling as a teacher and was later promoted to Assistant Principal in the land of the Mighty Jaguars—Forest Book High School under the leadership of Marshall Dupas. After the closing of North Forest Independent School District, Rhonda served as a guidance counselor for Spring Independent School District. She retired the summer of 2020 from Spring ISD, and began working in recruiting and as a guidance counselor for Lone Star College System.
At an early age, Rhonda accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at Holy Tabernacle Church in Boston Massachusetts under the leadership of Bishop Joe L. Smith. She served on the usher board, in several choirs, and the youth department. After her marriage to John, she became an active member of Gospel Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Robert M. Hobley. She continued serving under the leadership of Pastor Francis H. Williams and then Pastor Floyd W. Young. She was a dedicated member of the Worship team and culinary department.
Rhonda Michelle was preceded in death by her loving parents—David and Rose Simms, her sister—Ephlyn, and her brother—David Jr, and sister—Linda (James Sr.), as well as other family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband—John Sr., children—John Curtis Jr. (Theresa), JoRhon (Jazmine), Jomi, two grandchildren—Jrue and Jaxon Carter, 5 siblings—Donald (Gloria), Vernal (Vanessa), Stephanie, Kenneth (Shareen), Andrea (Larry), 2 god-children—Jennifer and Kayla, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.
