Ms. Mercedes Mae Collins' Obituary
Mercedes Walker Collins, a beloved matriarch, caregiver, and friend, passed away at the age of 83—though in her heart, she was forever 38. Her life was a testament to love, faith, resilience, and the deep bonds of family.
Born in Grand Prairie, Louisiana, Mercedes was raised in Washington, Louisiana, where she developed the values that would guide her throughout her life. She attended Grand Prairie High School and carried with her a lifelong love of learning, connection, and community.
Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents, Sedonia Walker and Arteon Walker, her daughter Shirley, as well as many of her siblings: Hervis, Arthur, Isreal, Isabel, Lucious, and Leward. She leaves behind her beloved brother, Rapheal, along with a host of nieces and nephews who cherished her deeply.
Family was the center of Mercedes’s world. She was the proud mother of six children: Shirley (joseph), Jessie (Vanessa), Michael (Patricia), Cynthia, Terrell, and Bertha. She was also the adoring grandmother of twenty grandchildren, and the joyful great-grandmother of thirty-four great-grandchildren, with one great-great-grandchild on the way. Each generation was a source of immense pride and joy, and she poured her love into every one of them.
Mercedes dedicated her life to caring for others as a healthcare provider, where her compassion transformed clients into extended family. Her nurturing spirit extended far beyond her profession—she was known for her selflessness, grace, and unwavering kindness.
She found happiness in life’s simple pleasures: music, dancing, and cooking meals that brought loved ones together. Her laughter was infectious, her humor unforgettable, and her presence a source of comfort and strength. To those who knew her, she was funny, loving, strong in her faith, and a guiding light—the true heart of her family.
Mercedes leaves behind not only a legacy of generations but also a message she carried in her heart: she was deeply proud of her family and all they had become. In her spirit, there are no goodbyes—only “see you later.”
Her memory will live on in the lives she touched, the love she gave, and the family she built.
