"We must make our lives as we sew, stitch by stitch."
Lois Mildred (Hughes) Mabrey was born on September 1, 1934, in Houston, TX to the late Maurice (Varres) Hughes and Angie Ella Vaughn Hughes. She was the eldest of six children. Lois began her walk with Christ at an early age attending United Methodist Church and in 1943 became a longtime member of St. John Baptist Church on Dowling Street in Houston, Texas.
Lois was an avid lifelong learner who attended Jack Yates High School and Texas Southern University. Her educational foundation afforded her some very rewarding employment opportunities, including thirty years of cumulative experience at NASA, General Electric and Wiley Industries. Her wealth of experience as a gifted seamstress and tailor eventually led to her establishing her own company, Qualcraft Inc., where she sub-contracted on numerous projects with the NASA/ Johnson Space Center and was instrumental in the development and manufacture of numerous projects, including designing, astronaut flight suits, components for the space shuttle and Skylab. Additionally, she was a talented pianist and did ministerial work as an organist at various churches, community events, and at home with family and friends.
Lois was blessed with a loving family. She married Charles Mabrey and together they raised three daughters and a son. She found purpose and meaning in her work, her church, traveling and time spent with her friends. Above all, she loved being with her family, a devoted mother, adoring auntie, grandmother and great grandmother.
She spent the final chapter of her life surrounded by the love and care of family and friends. Her radiant smile, joyful laughter and unwavering faith touched countless lives. Lois was a true trailblazer, nurturer, woman of immense strength, grace and hidden figure icon in our family. Our inspirational matriarch whose legacy will be remembered and treasured will truly be missed by all.
Lois was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Mabrey Sr.; son, Charles Mabrey Jr.; brothers and sisters, Maurice, Melvin, Carl, Sheryl and Della Adams. She leaves to celebrate her life, daughters, Debra Bradford (future son-in-law, Hillman Mills), Beverly Walker and Jacqueline Blake (Billy), her cherished grandchildren, Ta'Mara, Tamika, Sammie, Chris, Courtney, Fonya, and Deidre; 7 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews extended family and friends.
