Emmatyne “Tina” Lee was born in DeKalb, Texas to the late Midget and Olden Lee. Her family later relocated to Fort Worth, Texas. As the middle child of five, she gained a love for music at a very early age and began playing the piano for her first choir at age 11. Upon graduation, from I.M. Terrell High School, a close friend convinced her to relocate to Houston to attend Texas Southern University (TSU) and major in Music.
While at TSU, Emmatyne was active in multiple organizations. She received a coveted spot as a high-stepping majorette in the Ocean of Soul Marching Band. Emmatyne was a part of the university and concert choirs. She played women’s intermural basketball and was a charter member of Tau Beta Sigma Sorority. As time progressed, Emmatyne changed her major from Music to Industrial Education, where she mastered the art of tailoring. She obtained her B.S. Degree in 1962.
Emmatyne worked in various customer service roles. Texaco, Inc. was her last employer before retiring after 29 years of service. However, she never put her love of music and tailoring on the shelf. She continued utilizing her musical talents by singing, playing piano, and organ at various Houston area churches, East Bethel Missionary, Mt. Vernon Baptist, and the Church of the Living God- Temple #8. Emmatyne was a member of Brentwood Baptist Church for over 20yrs, before joining the Fort Bend Church in Sugarland, Texas. She utilized her vocal skills in the church choir. As a highly skilled tailor, she’s made custom wedding gowns, praise dancer uniforms, and blazers for the male chorus. Emmatyne was extremely fond of African fabric and was often asked to make items for Black History Month.
Emmatyne leaves behind to cherish her memories, two brothers: Olden Lee and Stephen Lee, daughters: Cyita Johnson and Tiqueta Garrett, granddaughter: Taqera Garrett, son-in-law: Michael Garrett, sister-in-law: Carol Lee, and a host of family, extended family, and friends.
