Edmund Charles Broussard was born August 20, 1932, to Milton J. and Josephine M. Broussard, in Lake Charles LA. Edmund attended Sacred Heart elementary and high school. He always possessed a strong interest in musical instruments and athletics. At the age of nine, he saved and purchased his first saxophone by making weekly payments of $5. In high school Edmund directed the award-winning all-girls choir and won first place for reciting scenes from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
At Xavier University in New Orleans, Edmund was selected to join the university’s concert choir. He represented Xavier University at various national conferences and was voted class president his sophomore, junior and senior years. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, he began a career in education and music in Opelousas, Louisiana where he taught band and vocal music at J. S. Clark Senior High School. A year later he was drafted into the United States Army where he served his country proudly for two years.
Edmund moved his family to Houston TX in 1958 and made his home there. He continued teaching music while playing professional performances through the Houston musicians local #65-669. He taught band and orchestra at Ryan Junior High School for 16 1/2 years. Edmund, the first African American president of musicians local #65-699, was honored by legendary jazz saxophonist Mr. Arnett Cobb who recommended him to perform with the renowned Count Basie Orchestra. In 1974, he received the coveted Duke Ellington award. Edmund’s outstanding leadership helped gain recognition for African American musicians to perform with Broadway shows in Houston. He also served as Co-President of the Houston Metropolitan Organization, and as a board member of the Ebony Opera Guild while chairing its Musical Affairs Committee.
Edmund directed the celebrated St. Mary of the Purification Catholic church choir for over 47 1/2-years. During this time, he was one of five musicians selected to work on the development and publication of the Black Catholic Hymnal, “Lead Me, Guide Me.” He continued to serve his church community as a lecturer and eucharistic minister, and as assistant director of RCIA Ministries.
As a member of the Knights and Ladies of Saint Peter Claver for over 47 years, he served at parish, state, and national levels.
