Eddie Charles White, Jr., was born on January 2, 1931, in Newbern, Alabama, to the union of Ed White, Sr. and Fannie Randolph White. The White Family relocated to Uniontown, Alabama, shortly after Eddie’s birth.
Eddie was the eldest of seven children. He was raised in Uniontown where he attended Uniontown District Academy (during Grades 1 through 6), and Perry County (Alabama), Training School, presently known as Robert C. Hatch High School, for the balance of his school years.
Eddie received the Lord early in life and was baptized at St. Peter Primitive Baptist Church in Uniontown. He often recalled the story of sitting on the “mourning” bench when he was called to serve the Lord. He was a man of great faith that sustained him throughout his life.
Upon graduation from high school, Eddie attended Morehouse College – until he transferred to Knoxville College – where, in 1952, he met the love of his life, Geraldyne Pettway White. At Knoxville College, where he was affectionately called E.C., Eddie majored in Sociology and Business, having received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955.
On June 17, 1956, Eddie and Geraldyne married, and settled in New York City. This sacred union was blessed with two daughters, Chiquita and D’Juanna. He and Geraldyne worked, raised their family, and served their community.
Eddie worked for a short while as a math teacher, and later as a postal worker, but ultimately found his calling as a social worker with the New York City Department of Social Services. He retired in 1992 after dutifully serving 27 years, and, until the couple’s relocation to Houston in 2019, they remained active citizens and servants of the community in which they lived.
Eddie was a dedicated member of Eastchester Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, trustee, lay minister, and for many years, as the church’s financial secretary. Eddie was also a member of the Usher Board, welcoming both church members and visitors each Sunday, and he volunteered in the Soup Kitchen, and faithfully attended the Men’s Bible Study.
A longtime and loyal member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, Eddie was initiated into the Beta Epsilon Chapter of this distinguished fraternity of service and brotherhood on the campus of Knoxville College in 1955. After college, he joined the Omicron Iota Chapter in Westchester, New York, where he served for over 40 years. Then, in 2020, Eddie was honored as a 65-year member of the fraternity. The following year, he was celebrated for his dedicated service by the Second District. Previously, Eddie was awarded Man of the Year, on two occasions, for his brotherhood and service that transcended the chapter. Eddie enjoyed conversations with his fraternity brothers, and as both a natural and professional advisor at heart, he received immeasurable joy mentoring younger fraternity brothers on subjects ranging from career decisions, to married life, and fatherhood. He served on numerous committees and was admired for his ability to arrange successful fundraising events.
Eddie was involved in numerous other volunteer endeavors throughout Westchester County. He was a volunteer with the Mount Vernon School District, and he served as an advocate for education, encouraging young people across his community, and surrounding communities, in New York, to continue their education while also helping many matriculate to college. He was also an active member of the Knoxville College Alumni Association and was a long-time president of the New York City Chapter of the Knoxville College Alumni Association.
Eddie was the epitome of a great man. He was a devoted husband, caring father and grandfather, dear brother, supportive uncle, great neighbor, and a friend to many. (He never met a stranger!) He was the voice of reason, the strength of his family, and a quiet, but firm, storm. If he could not personally help someone, he would inevitably find someone who could.
To know him was to love him, and he will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
Surrounded by loving family, Eddie departed this life, Saturday, July 15, 2023, after a prolonged illness. Left to cherish indelibly etched memories are his loving wife of 67 years, Geraldyne (nee Pettway); two adoring daughters: Chiquita White (Eddy Anuforo) of Liberty Township, Ohio, and D’Juanna White Satcher, MD, of Bellaire, Texas; two doting grandchildren, Daija Satcher and Robert Satcher, III (both of Bellaire); sister Cecelia Pittman (Newport News, VA); brothers Frank White (Uniontown, AL) and Victor (Deloris) White (Bronx, NY), and sister-in-law Bessie Jackson (Opelika, AL).
Other surviving family members who will miss him dearly include nieces: Carlane (William) Pittman-Hampton, Chadra Pittman, Carla (Phillip) White; Terri (Clifford) Madry, Robin Gardner, Shanelle White, Regina (Kennie) White-Santiago, Wanda (Eddie) Edmunds, Paulette Brockington, Frances Brockington, Sondra Craig, Jenita Pettway, Twyla (Frank) Robinson, Angela Pettway, Donna (Gregory) Morris, and nephews: Robert Pettway, Gary Pettway, John (Marlyce) McCants, Baron Pettway, Mark Pettway, Joe White, Jr., John Jackson. He also leaves to remember him, a host of great nieces and nephews, other extended family, and friends.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: one sister, Dorothy White, and two brothers Joe White and Tim White; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mrs. Leola Pettway and Mr. Robert Dewitt Pettway; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mary Alice White, Carlton Pittman, Robert Etta Jordan, David Pettway, Augusta Brockington, Patrick Pettway, Nellie Pettway, Susan McCants, John McCants, Sr., Webber Pettway, Alice Pettway, Carl Pettway, Barbara Pettway, Jay Jackson, and Marva Pettway.
Mr. Eddie C. White’s life, undoubtedly, will serve as an eternal blessing to the scores of others who were beneficiaries of his inherent gifts.
