Carolyn Ruth Slater Whittaker was born December 23, 1952, in Houston, Texas to Earnestine and Hammond Slater Jr., who preceded her in death. On July 23, 2022, she passed away at Harbor Hospice from this earthly life into a new journey with the God Almighty as her Book of Life closed. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age under the leadership of deceased Rev. W. H. Banks at Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Carolyn's Christian life journey took her to other church affiliations, i.e., Christian Faith Missionary Baptist Church and New Light Christian Center. But she returned back to Jordan Grove as a faithful and devoted member under the leadership of Dr. Danny Davis until the remainder of her life. She immediately stepped right in and served faithfully with the Usher Board which has always been her life's calling.
She was also the President Emeritus of the Christian Business and Professional “Love Boat”, carrying on the legacy founded by her mother, an organization composed of Christian believers from various churches in the Houston metropolitan area. Even today, under the direction of Sister Mollie Tyler, these Love Boat's initiatives are still being carried on.
Her higher educational background was initially fashioned from her learning from Evan E. Worthing Senior High School and Franklin Beauty School, of which she obtained her cosmetology certification and license. She graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1975, where she received her bachelor's degree in history. While attending Prairie View, she was initiated in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Zeta Gamma Chapter, Spring 1973. Carolyn was a Founding Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, Mu Kappa Omega Graduate Chapter, Missouri City Texas, where she has been a member for over 40 years.
Carolyn was a devoted teacher in the Houston Independent School District. She retired after 31 years of services after teaching at Evan E. Worthing Senior High School and Jack Yates Senior High School both in the academic and vocational sectors.
Carolyn was married to McClairy Jackson III and to this union their daughter, Bremica T. Jackson, was born in 1982. In 2008, Carolyn reunited with Rathel Whittaker, a dating friend at Prairie View A&M University and on February 27, 2010, they were married.
Carolyn was an affectionate and kindhearted mother, aunt, and friend. Her charismatic personality was contagious to everyone she met, and her smile could brighten your darkest day.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her father Hammond Slater, her mother Earnestine (Cole) Slater, uncles Freddie Slater, L. R, Slater, and Willie Melvin Slater, aunts James Eta (Slater) Griffin, Ruby Jean (Slater) Harris and Roberta (Slater) Dickson. Left to cherishing her memories are her aunt Florine Phifer, her uncle Arthur Lee Slater Jr. (Piccola), her daughter Bremica Jackson, her husband Rathel Whittaker, her stepson Rathel Whittaker II, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church families, associates and friends.
We, the family, would like to thank God for the life and legacy of Carolyn Ruth Slater Whittaker. We will cherish the memories of her laughter and love forever.
