On March 4, 1936, God graced this earth with a bundle of joy named Bettie Joyce Flood. She was the proud daughter of Robert E. and Bessie Mae Flood (Luster). Bettie attended school in Houston, TX beginning at Blackshear Elementary and graduating from Jack Yates High School. After which she completed a year of studies at Prairie View A&M University.
Along with her family, she attended St. John Baptist Church (Rev. M. M. Malone) until the age of 16 when she accepted Christ as her savior and joined Evangelist Temple Church of God in Christ (Dr. Joe E. Nelson). In 1955 she was joined in holy matrimony to Delbert DeFlora and to this union was born three children, Debra Joyce, Danita Jean, and Delbert Eugene (Jr.). Later in 1955 she transferred her membership to New Zion Temple Holiness Church (Bishop H.W. Falls) where she served faithfully in multiple capacities for nearly 65 years.
Bettie worked as a nurse’s aide at Lockwood, Riverside and St. Joseph’s hospitals before accepting a position with the U.S. Post Office in 1970. She remained with the Postal Service until she retired in 1992. She loved to travel, to sew, to attend church conferences and spend time with family.
In the early morning hours just before dawn on August 6, 2020, angels descended from heaven to escort Bettie to her heavenly home. She was preceded in death by both parents, sister Barbara Lee Evans, brother Robert Joe Flood, son Delbert Eugene DeFlora and great-grandson Marcus DeFlora Jr. She leaves to mourn two siblings, James Russell Flood and Bestine ‘Tina’ Forbes; daughters Debra Joyce DeFlora, Danita DeFlora-Johnson (A. Marcel), a faithful daughter-in-law Lucretia Joyce DeFlora along with 7 grandchildren, Dameshia, Marcus, Donte’, Marcel, Marlia, Delletia and D’Andra, her 5 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces/nephews, cousins, and friends.
