Mr. Adolphus "Pokey" Gray Jr.'s Obituary
Mr. Adolphus "Pokey" Gray Jr. was born in Houston, TX on April 19, 1951.
He was the son of Adolphus Gray and Marie Burnett. It was in the home of his beloved mother where Adolphus quietly and peacefully transitioned from Earth to Heaven in the early morning of Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Adolphus was a lifelong resident of Houston, where he attended local elementary and middle schools. He was a proud graduate from Jack Yates High School and attended Texas Southern University.
Adolphus loved interacting with children and spent his career working with special needs children, where he excelled in American Sign Language.
In addition, Adolphus was loved by all children who had the pleasure of knowing him. And he was a special “Uncle Pokey” to all of his nieces and nephews.
Adolphus was also an avid gardener and surrounded himself with all kinds of plants and flowers. He and his mother spent many hours together shopping for new things to grow. He had a “green thumb” and took great pride in discussing the many different varieties of plants and flowers in his collection.
Mr. Gray leaves to cherish his memory: loving mother, Marie Lyons; brother, Alfred Mock (Linda); and sister, Stacey Wallace (Renaldo). His survivors also include many nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and friends, and his beloved Schnauzer, “Tina.”
