Mrs. Charlotte Kathryn McElroy

November 4, 1946 - August 16, 2019

Charlotte Kathryn McElroy, of Houston, Texas passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019. She was the first child born to her proud parents Walter D. and Mamie L. Smith on November 4, 1946. Charlotte attended the public schools of Beaumont, TX and graduated in 1964 from Charlton-Pollard High School. She continued her education by enrolling in Texas Southern University in Houston and completed her undergraduate work at Lamar University in Beaumont, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. After graduating from Lamar, she was employed at EEOC of Jefferson County where she met her husband, Alfred Z. McElroy (Mack), whom she soon married on May 5, 1973. After their union she moved to Port Arthur to become the loving mother to Elroy, Austin, Arthur Louis, Andrew and Anita Trisynda. In 1975 Adanna was born of the marriage & completed their family. Charlotte began working at their business, McElroy’s Insurance Agency, as well as the proprietor of Charlotte’s Perfect Fit, where she loved to sew creating bridal gowns and other originals for men, women and children. After her husband Mack’s untimely death in 1990, she closed their business and took a seat on the PAISD school board to complete his term on the board. With an almost empty nest and a love for education, Charlotte began teaching at Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur ISD and was Teacher of the Year for several years. She left PAISD to work for Windham School District and moved back to Beaumont. With the encouragement of her family, she earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University in 2005. Charlotte eventually moved to Houston in 2006 to be near her children and grandchildren and continued working in education until her death. Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Z. McElroy, Sr., father, Walter D. Smith, Sr. and brothers Walter D. Smith, Jr. and David C. Smith, Sr. Left to bear her loss and cherish her loving memories are her devoted mother, Mamie LeBlanc; her children Alfred “Elroy” McElroy, Jr. (Lieu Pham), Austin McElroy, Sr. (Becky), Arthur Louis McElroy (Jackie), Andrew McElroy, Sr.(Kim), Anita McElroy and Adanna McElroy; brother, Michael Smith, Sr.; sisters Christine Smith and Mamie Jones; grandchildren Alfred Amir McElroy (Yasamin), Austin McElroy, Jr. (Christina), Calen McElroy, Kiara McElroy, Arielle McElroy, Andrew McElroy, Jr., Tristyn McElroy and Aubrey McElroy; great-grandchildren Kye McElroy and Bishop McElroy; Extended Children Alfred Martin, Jr., Andrea Martin-Koeuth, Alfredia Martin-Foster, Tennille Kincade-Lane, Shanequa Charles, Terrance Jackson and her lifelong friend Bettye Faye Duplantier. Along with many more family and friends who loved her dearly.
