Barbara Youngblood Seymour transitioned on January 28, 2017. She was born on November 26, 1928, in Columbia, South Carolina to Theodore and Sara Boozer Youngblood. Mrs. Seymour attended Waverly Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School, where she met her future husband, Leroy Seymour. He carried her books and walked her home from school during many days of their senior year. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Spelman College, and a Master of Science in Counseling from South Carolina State University, where she worked for 30 years in various positions in the Business Office, retiring as Head Cashier. She was a proud member of Beta Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and a founding member of the Orangeburg Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She was a member of the Thirteen Hearts Bridge Club for 50 years, and a Platinum member of The Links, Incorporated and the Orangeburg Chapter of The Links. Her affinity for numbers and bookkeeping led her to serve from time to time as Treasurer of each. She served on the Usher Board and Board of Trustees of New Mount Zion Baptist Church, worked in the soup kitchen and served for many years as the Church Treasurer. She also served as a polling clerk for many years, rising before dawn to pick up ballot boxes and ready the voting location on election day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Theodore Youngblood, Jr., and her husband of 48 years, Leroy S. Seymour. She leaves to cherish her memories three children: Barbara L. Seymour, Esq. of Houston, Texas, Leroy R. Seymour (Anya) of Indianapolis, Indiana and Theodore P. Seymour, of Atlanta, Georgia; a foster daughter, Jennifer Harper, M. D., also of Atlanta; three grandchildren: Leroy J. Seymour of Urbana, Illinois, Theodore J. Seymour of Los Angeles, California and Paul E. Seymour of Indianapolis, all of whom she loved profoundly, and a host of other relatives and friends. Remembrances and tributes may be made to Spelman College, 350 Spelman Lane, SW, Atlanta, GA 30314-4339, or to New Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1785 Amelia Street, Orangeburg, SC 29115.
